How to measure classroom furniture

There is a European Standard for the size of educational furniture – EN1729 Part 1 and 2 (2006) in respect of functional dimensions, safety requirements and test methods for chairs and tables for general educational purposes within educational institutions.

Definitions:

• Correct seat height – the measurement is taken from the floor to the back of the knee when seated with thighs horizontal and lower leg vertical with feet flat to the floor.
• Correct table height – the measurement is from the floor to the underside of the elbow whilst sitting with the upper arm vertical and lower arm horizontal.

It is generally recommended that a minimum table size of 1200 x 600 is used in upper primary schools and secondary schools so that two chairs size D & E will fit underneath.
